Suggest Treatment For Blood Clot In Legs, Pneumonia And Swollen Extremities

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: My 84 year old Aun has congestive heart failure, a healing broken hip, blood clots in her legs and recovering from pneumonia. Both extremities, upper and lower, are swollen and weeping. She is taking diuretics but does not help. She also has crones disease. She is in nursing home they have bandaged her arms so that she does not get her clothes wet. I have doubts about some of the care she is getting. Is bandaging going to hurt the edema and should she have blood work done to see what else can be done for her skin

Brief Answer:
Following investigations are needed...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through the medical history of your aunt and feel sorry for the situation she is going through.

You are saying that she has :
- congestive heart failure
- a healing broken hip
- blood clots in her legs
- recovering from penumonia
- swollen upper and lower extremities that are wetting
- Crohn's disease

Please bare in mind that Crohn's disease is involving bowels and sometimes, the lesions will affect the skin. Biopsy of skin lesions is advised to exclude it.

Further investigations are needed to evaluate her health problems:
- kidney function test to exclude kidney failure
- liver function test to exclude liver failure
- complete blood count to rule out anemia
- biochemical testing and blood albumin testing
are advised together with urine analysis.

All these tests are necessary to run for further evaluation.

Wish her fast recovery!

Brief Answer:
No,wrapping will protect from infection...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back XXXXXXX

No my dear, wrapping will prevent the leaking edema to get infected. That will not cause any harm. It will also help reducing a little bit the edema through mechanical pressure (although it is low intensity) and help in healing process.

Do not worry about the wrapping as it will protect for bacterial co-infection.
