Suggest Treatment For Blurred Vision And Slurred Speech

Question: I was wondering if i will have any long term effects from a possible very minor TIA i had about 3 weeks ago. I am 20 years old and it was originally caused by me stupidly mixing cocaine and 400mg advil... not both at once but advil after about an hour or so after. The possible TIA i had lasted a few hours in and out. No half body shut downs or anything but a ling here and there would tingle, and i would occasionally have garbled speech and blurred vision.

Brief Answer:
TIA's do cause any LONG TERM EFFECTS

Detailed Answer:
Good evening. Thank you for your questions.

It is not clear to me that you actually suffered a TIA and MY CONCERN as a physician is the potential you could've or COULD be doing to yourself by using cocaine. Even though your symptoms could be related to ischemic brain disease....it is not likely cocaine is a cause of such events. Cocaine taken in excessive doses could potentially cause hemorrhagic types of intracerebral events but these are much less likely to cause such TRANSIENT events as you describe.

In direct response to your question if we were to assume a TIA for a moment then, by the very definition of the term TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK there should be no long term consequences on body or brain function. That is the "beauty" of a TIA as opposed to a stroke.

I also don't think there is much clinical relevance to the "mixing" of Advil and cocaine. Those 2 agents have no important interactions as far as I know.

The only way, however, to definitely know whether you've had a TIA or not in the future is to get yourself to an ER and hopefully be examined by a neurologist. TIA's and strokes for that matter are often misdiagnosed and in the face of a cocaine high I would be skeptical of this as a cause of such symptoms as opposed to the direct effects of the drug itself on cerebral centers of activity.

On a more important note though I would urge you to seek assistance with the cocaine that you tried because the risk is this can become a habit if it isn't already. I see patients regularly in a detoxification clinic who are your age, college educated, and bright and the stories are always the same with respect to how they got started and how much control they believed they could exercise on the drug to keep it strictly "recreational".....yet time after time that thought process is shown to be fatally flawed and these patients go from bad to worse in the blink of an eye without even realizing that it's happening.

Your mistake was not "mixing" Advil and cocaine......it was using cocaine......Please make a phone call....now if possible and get set up to be seen at a clinic or DETOX center for help and protection before things swing out of your control. All the best to you.

If I've adequately answered your questions could you do me a huge favor by CLOSING THE QUERY and being sure to include some fine words of feedback along with a 5 STAR rating if you feel my suggestions have helped? Again, many thanks for posing your questions and please let me know how things turn out.
