Suggest Treatment For Broken Molar

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Dec 2015
Question: I had small hole in my right mandibular 1st molar (lower jaw second 2nd visible from my right) around 15 years back. It was filled with some silver like material.
Today after lunch I found that part of it is broken. Looks like outside surface of original teeth is broken. I am worried because I might have swallowed broken part. I am not sure what to do now? I don't have any pain but worried. I have attached pics of remaining broken teeth.
Due to regional holidays, I am not able to find any open dental clinic nearby. Is there any urgent treatment require?

Brief Answer:
Tooth wall towards tongue is broken, needs treatment but nothing serious..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

Aa per your complain, description of the past treatment and images that you have attached shows that the lingual wall (wall towards tongue) is broken and as it is a small piece if it got swallowed also there is nothing serious as it will pass in stool and will not cause any complications..
Other thing is that there is also decay visible in the tooth so once you can approach a dentist do it at the earliest and get evaluated but now you should not get the tooth simply filled as there is excessive loss of tooth structure and you should get the capping of the tooth done after getting root canal treatment done if required and it will be confirmed after an x Ray..
As of now you can relax, there is nothing serious but avoid chewing from that side to prevent further tooth fracture..

Any further questions are welcome..

Thanks and regards..

Thank you Dr. Honey,
I would prefer root canal treatment as last option. I understood from your response, if there is internal damage (which XRay will confirm), RCT is the only option. Otherwise, cap will work. (Please correct me if I understood it wrongly)

Brief history, I had 3 of 4 molars filled the same way around 15 years back. 2 years back, same tooth become sensitive, Dentist did XRay and suggested that everything is normal. After few days tooth become normal (no sensitivity). Around 1 month back, again same tooth become sensitive. This time, I am not able to apply enough power for chewing and chewing become a bit painful (for semi hard to hard food). and today I had fracture. From attached pic, I understood that other teeth are having minor cavity.

Considering above history, will you suggest to have any other test / scan to be done prior to XRay for one or more teeth?

Brief Answer:
You need to get an x ray done, no other investigation needed..

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome Again..

As per your complain it seems that if your tooth has become sensitive and in case even if there has been pain on chewing there is a probable cause that the tooth needs a Root Canal Treatment only and you should consult an Endodontist and get evaluated and get an
x Ray done and most probable chance is that you will be needing a Root Canal Treatment followed by a cap..

Any further questions are welcome..

Thanks and regards..
