Posted on Thu, 11 Feb 2016
Question: I have these small bumps along my perineum from the back of my scrotum to my anus. The feel deep in the tissue. Probably the size of a pea. Somewhat moveable and soft. I have had them for several years. I should also note that I have a pea sized lump on my epidemis that has been there at least 10 years. It has only grown slightly. I asked my gp about it was, but he was not concerned

Brief Answer:
Most likely to be multiple sebaceous cysts.

Detailed Answer:
Hello xxxxxand welcome to HCM.

As an Urologist, i can fully understand and share your concern.

What you describe, is likely to be multiple sebaceous cysts, common in that area.
However, you need to have a local examination of the swellings, to confirm this.

As they've been present for so many years, without being symptomatic, don't worry.
A surgeon will also carry out a rectal examination,to confirm this.

What you do need to do is, report urgently to a surgeon,if there're acute changes in the swellings, such as :
1.sudden increase in size,
2.reddening of the swellings,
3.pain in the swellings.
4.discharge from the swellings,
5.itching over the swelling.

Maintain good genital hygiene.

Hope your doubts are cleared.
If you've any other doubts, you're welcome to send them here.

Wish you good health.

Thank you! And it is common for these to feel like they are deep in the muscles and tendons of the area behind my scrotum and between my rectum? I have thrown myself in to a bit of a health anxiety, I am currently undergoing screening for possible MS. I had the mri yesterday.

Brief Answer:
It's superficial.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

These aren't deep, but quite superficial.
That's why you can feel them and even move them.

There's no relation between MS and these swellings.
You needn't worry about that.

Wish you well.

Thank you! One more question. So they can feel like they are attached to like the part of my penis that runs under the skin between my scrotum and rectum? With no signs of them being above the skin? Sorry for all the questioning.

They wouldn't be visible in a photograph. I guess I would describe them as being attached to the penis and not to the skin. I can feel them under the skin when I press on the area. I guess it would be similar to how you can feel lymph nodes in your neck, but I don't believe they are lymph nodes.

Brief Answer:
They're not lymph nodes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

These swellings aren't lymph nodes for sure.

If you can feel them with your fingers, you may be able to even lift it upwards, to the skin surface. The same you can do with superficial lymph nodes in the neck.

At present, leave it alone. Don't forget to examine them once a month,or earlier if symptomatic. If any changes as mentioned earlier in my reply, is seen or felt, report at once to a doctor.

Wishing that no such changes ever occur in your lifetime.
Wish you good health always.
