Question : I have stenosis of spine causing pressure on nerve causing scitaic pain down my left leg and feet falling asleep when im standing for a while...my dr wants to give me an epidural with a local anestitic...is an epidural effective ,is the injection uncomfortable and are there any side effects
Brief Answer:
An epidural steroid shot remains a good option.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case.
An epidural steroid shot remains a good option, for canal stenosis.
But no one can guarantee that pain will relive, but effect will be better than medication.
Injection is not painful.
Side effects can be anaesthesia related, inflammation for few days, mild pain at injection site, but no major side effect.
For spinal canal stenosis its better to do surgery and get decompression done if not relieved.
Till time you can take analgesic and neurotropic [gabapentin] medication.
And remember; avoid lifting weights, Sit with support to back. You can consult physiotherapist for help.
Physiotherapy like ultrasound and interferential therapy will give temporary relief.
Core stabilizing spine exercises will help.
I will advise to check your vit B12 and vit D3 level.
My patients get good relief with holistic approach like pranayama, yoga, you can also start them.
