Suggest Treatment For Cerebral Dysfunction

default
Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017
Question: I was diagnosed with cerebral dysfunction when I was four years old (I am now 48). I was just told about this today. I was also told back in November 2016 that I am on the autism spectrum. As far as I know I was never treated for cerebral dysfunction or autism. My parents kept everything a secret from me. My question is, is it possible that any treatment can help me, or is it way too late for that? I have no idea what caused the cerebral dysfunction as I have no access to my medical records from that time.

Hi,

Thanks for your question on HealthcareMagic.

I do understand your pain and discomfort

As per your clinical history is concerned you had (ASD)in your child hood, but now taking a normal life.So nothing to be worried as you have no problem now.No cure exist for ASD till now and there is no one size fits all treatments. The main goal is supporting treatment only and reducing ASD symptoms .Treatment which we advise for any patient is like this -:

1)Behavior and communication therapies

2)Educational therapies

3)Family therapies

4)Medications-anti-depressants,anti-psychotic,if required but not required in all cases.

So now you are 48 years of age and do you have any deficit present in communication or your behavior towards others? If any problem present then you need therapy otherwise not necessary. In your child hood you have already treated that is why now you can be able to write this question. So it is usually a childhood disease and if everything is good for you then no treatment required.

Hope that helps

The thing is, I was never treated for this. I was put in special education classes, I had tutoring when I was in the second grade & I was required to see a psychologist during my teen years when the school system discovered my condition and forced my parents to send me to a school for kids with behavioral problems (of which I had none). But the psychologist never told me my diagnosis either and I never felt I got anything out of those one-on-one "therapy" sessions with him (mainly because I saw him as always acting like an unprofessional, unserious dork). I also never took any medications. I'm still immature for my age, and I act out once in a while. I also have nervous tics. My communication skills leave much to be desired and I'm still somewhat antisocial. I feel that if my parents had told me about my diagnosis when I was 21 that I could have gotten treatment then and I wouldn't have had the problems with my behavior at work for the last 15 years. I kept getting written up for things that I never saw as problems and I saw my supervisor as a control freak Nazi. Now I wonder if it was me all along. I have noticed that ever since I told her about my condition in November that I haven't gotten into trouble with her.

Hi,

Thanks for your follow up reply

As per your clinical history let me explain each point step wise as below:-

1)you want to know whether you have been treated in your childhood or not and my answer is you have been treated by the psychologist and treatment procedure is supportive only as i mentioned earlier.

2)You want to know why your doctor could not tell you what is your diagnosis and my answer will be it should not be told to any person as it is also a part of treatment.so in my opinion he has done a nice job.

3)You have written that you had not given any medication and my opinion is that medication is not required in all cases and it depends upon case to case.

4)You had mentioned about some clinical symptoms but it has no relation with your main disorder at all so for a clarification further need a talk with your clinical psychologist only.

5)Lastly you want to know that if your parents told you earlier then you must have done treatment earlier and in my opinion a person should not be told about her illness at all.It has no cure at all and it is a childhood illness only .So never think about the disease that you had in the past and there will not be any problem with you in future also.

Hope that helps

I don't understand. Are you saying a person has no right to know their own medical history? How is keeping a person in the dark about their condition part of treatment? It makes no sense that a person would go for treatment & not know what they are being treated for. It's one thing if the person is a child. It's completely different if it's a consenting adult capable of making his or her own decisions. If autism is a childhood illness then why are there adults who have it? Also, since I am legally entitled to know what's in my medical records (according to my lawyer) why would anyone think that I'd never find out about it? Especially since my siblings found out (by reading my medical records) & had no obligation to keep this a secret from me?

Brief Answer:
ASD

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your prompt reply

As per your question let me clarify your problems point wise-:

1)In your first point i may say that you have right to know about your illness now.

2)Actually these disorders are mental in origin so when a clinical psychologist is treating a case he doses not disclose it due to psychological impact of disease on patient only. So that is why they may not have disclosed to you.

3)As per my own experience i have seen many children with ASD when they mature show fewer disturbance in behavior and lead normal lives. And untreated cases may have language, social and behavioral problems.

4)So now as you are an adult so you should know all these things without any problems. And this will never give you any psychological impact at all because now you already know your past disease.

Hope you got your points
