Posted on Fri, 17 Jun 2016
Question: Hi, I developed bronchitis the week before Easter. I have completed prednisone taper 3 weeks ago and today is my last day of augmentan. the yellow mucus has gone away but I am still getting very congested and coughing up sticky clear mucus in the morning and sometimes evening. I have an appointment with a pulmonologist this week for testing for asthma. is this normal to still be congested this long? it's awful I cough and cough and my chest actually growls when the mucus is trying to come up and I feel like I cannot clear my airway.

also, i have had this congested feeling even before I developed bronchitis --bronchitis just made it worse. feeling like my airway is not clear. not throat--father down. can asthma cause this?

Brief Answer:
Possibility of asthma is less.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Possibility of bronchitis is more.
Asthma is less likely in your case.
But better to get done PFT (pulmonary function test) to confirm this.
PFT will also tell you about severity of the disease and treatment is based on severity only.
You may need inhaled bronchodilator and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).
So consult pulmonologist and discuss about PFT.
Please let me know
1. Do you smoke?
2. Do you have allergy?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions,so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

I have never smoked and all allergy tests have come back negative. although I do sneeze a couple times a day. I do believe there be be an asthma issue because I cannot get about 350 on peak flow. I can get to 400 if I take a puff of albuterol.

I am very concerned of the possibility of chronic bronchitis. I get this every year. although I have never smoked every. will the PFT show chronic bronchitis?

the reason I think I have asthma is when i get bronchitis I behave like an asthmatic wheezing tons of mucus hard to breath they always have to put me on high dose of prednisone

Brief Answer:
Possibility of seasonal bronchitis (allergic bronchitis) is more.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, by your history and description, possibility of seasonal bronchitis (allergic bronchitis) is more.
You get these symptoms once a year. So at the start of particular season (most commonly spring), you expose to allergens and get symptoms.
Also ask for PFT with reversibility testing.
If this is positive then asthma is more likely.
But if this is negative then allergic (seasonal) bronchitis is more likely.
Please let me know
1. During which particular time of year, these symptoms start?
2. Do your family members have allergy?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
