Question: Chest congestion on left side?

Brief Answer:
Avoid steroids during an active infection. Get a second opinion.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Yes, I would go easy on the steroids during an active infection and since your chest tightness has gone down substantially. Steroids can flare up an infection.

2. In addition to Augmentin, an anti-allergic mucolytic, an anti-inflammatory, steam inhalation and a medicated gargle will help. Keeping warm and hydration with adequate fluids and rest is essential for early recovery.

3. A Chest X-ray is unlikely to be abnormal at your age, if the chest auscultation is fine.

4. A throat swab and sputum examination will be of use in selecting the correct antibiotics.

5. I would recommend a second opinion. You should get better soon with the above line of treatment.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
You will need a prescription for these medications.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. An anti-allergic (such as cetirizine, levocetirizine or fexofenadine), a mucolytic (such as ambroxol or bromhexine) and a medicated gargle/ oral rinse (such as Betadine) are advised. It is unlikely that you will get these without a prescription from a local doctor.

2. Yes, you can use a sinus rinse while taking your medications.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

I've also have been belching and having acid reflux and I think that could be the cause of my nasal drip?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sumit Bhatti (31 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Gastritis due to antibiotics, steroids. Take probiotics, anti-reflux meds.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. The belching and acid relux may be due to the antibiotics and steroids.

2. The acid reflux can make a post-nasal drip worse and vice versa, but the reflux will not be the cause of the post nasal drip.

3. You can request your physician for a probiotic and anti-reflux medication.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
