Brief Answer:
Acyclovir needs to be given. Avoid direct contact with mother temporarily.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

The first thing that I would like to ask is the age of the child. Chicken pox in mother could have serious adverse effects on the child since he has been exposed. Acyclovir will help in preventing infection in the child or can also reduce the severity of infection if it occurs. If given in proper dose, it should not cause any harm to the child. In fact, in such a condition it is essential to be given.

Please hold the breast feeding and give external feeds as of now. Keep the baby away from the mother for the time being and follow the instructions of your doctor. In case the child develops manifestations of the infection, intravenous acyclovir would be essential.

I would insist you not to panic. With early and proper intervention things should be fine.

Hope that helps.

Brief Answer:
Acyclovir needs to be given even if symptoms are not present.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking back.

The child will not become immune by taking mother's milk. Acyclovir needs to be given in advance even if symptoms are not present.
