Question: Hello, I am a 26 year old female often suffering from large hard bowel movements often accompanied by substantial amounts of blood. I believe I have a recurring anal fisher due to the pain in a specific spot each time. I treat with over the counter stool softeners as well as preparation h. I am now however concerned if the same types of bowl movements continue it could possibly damage anal sphincter. I am going to seek medical attention but would you be able to tell me how severe a bowel movement would be to do that type of damage? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Chronic constipation can lead to anal damages

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

Chronic constipation can damage anal structures through:
- laceration of mucosa
- damages to the anal sphincter
- damages to the local nerves from compression and possible mucosa errosion

If you got all your problems treated well and in time, you won't have such problems. Get an appointment with proctologist as soon as possible and run anoscopy to evaluate anal structures further.

Hope it helped!
