Suggest Treatment For Chronic Constipation

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Dec 2016
Question: I have chronic constipation and can I go 2 or more weeks without a bowel movement, when I do my temperature will elevate to the point I am streaming with sweat, I have worse pain then I did in child birth, I get a feeling like I don't belong in my own skin and the fatigue during this leaves me completely exhausted to where I have a hard time handling myself on the toilet. Then the next few days after I have a hard time eating to the point I can't always hold my food down. Does anyone have any idea what my problem is?

Brief Answer:
Constipation needs work up and management

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
Welcome to HCM and thanks for the query
I understand your concern

Since when do you have this problem?
Do you have diabetes?

Your symptoms could be due to enteropathy, fecoliths obstruction, inadequate fiber intake.
The more the bowel is not emptied the more difficult it becomes to evacuate as the liquid content of the stool is reabsorbed.
The stool becomes hard and this hard stuff goes on accumulating in the gut produce symptoms.

I would suggest to consult the gastroenterologist and undergo stool examination, ultrasound scan of abdomen, colonic transit studies, defecography and colonoscopy examination.

Following advice will help you:
Glycerine enema for immediate relief
Syrup Lactulose: can be taken up to 30 ml twice a day
Tab bisacodyl at bedtime can useful
Bulking agents like isabgol husk

Lifestyle changes:
Drink one spoon of honey in warm water daily in morning before the bowel movement.
Eat high fiber diet. Every meal should have salads and fruits with skin.
Drink 2-4 litre water daily
Daily evening and morning walk for 30-45 minutes to regularize the bowel movement.
Take more fruits and green leafy vegetables in the diet.
Set Up regular time for the motion.

This is my personal information based on information available
Consult the gastroenterologist to share my opinion and take proper treatment.

Hope I have answered your query
If you have further query then I will be happy to help you

This started when I was a child, not to the severity that it is now. No I am not diabetic. I also have severe chronic pain in my back due to scoliosis, an auto accident in 1978, onset of osteoporosis and arthritis, plus I have a dwarfism called Pseudopseudoparathyroidism. I also have had both hips replaced and my body is not adjusting to the change, the hip replacements were from having hip displacia(?) from birth that was never diagnosed as a child. So needless to say I have a very hard time getting around or walking. I know my pain meds add to my chronic constipation but I have had chronic constipation from childhood also. Now is the bisacodyl a stool softener(?), if so I've tried those and they don't work. Is this sugar lactulose and enema over the counter? And where do I get the husk, what form is it in? I also gag very easily on some things where I try to ingest them. You suggested that I talk to gastroenterologist, well I actually have and they didn't do anything or suggest anything so I really don't know if that will help. This is a small community and we only have the one of them here. The fruits and vegetables I can do. I look forward to hearing your answers to the rest.

Hello dear
Welcome back and thanks for the follow up.
I really appreciate your concern and sorry to hear about your problem

You have constipation since childhood and difficult to manage.
But you can follow my advice for symptomatic relief.

Lactulose can be bought over-the-counter (maximum dose:30 ml twice daily. Dose should be reduced after improvement)
Glycerine enema should be taken under the advice of your physician.

Husk is also available over-the counter.
It is available in granular powder and capsule form
Take it after mixing 1 to 2 rounded teaspoonfuls powder in warm water, 2 times a day.

You can take these medicines under the advice of your physician.
