Brief Answer:
Chronic diarrhoea can be caused by bacterial infection or IBD.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,
Thank you for the query.

Chronic diarrhoea can be caused by bacterial infection,Lactose intolerance, colon cancer, bowels obstruction, hyperthyroidism, medicines (including those for high cholesterol), inflammatory bowels disease.

I kindly would like to ask you some questions like:

1)do you have blood in stools?
2)do you have fever?
3)do you have some times diarrhoea and others constipation?
4) if you have done investigations like blood work, biochemical tests, stool tests and colonoscopy then please upload those to me.

If I were your treating doctor I would recommend you to run further test if they had not been done previously.

1)repeat examination of stool for ova/parasites
2)culture of stool
3)malabsorption tests
4)Thyroid function test
5)An upper GI endoscopy with small bowel biopsy

Hope this will help. Get back to me with further information.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
The only possibility could be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) now.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the follow-up.

Chronic diarrhoea (at least 3 loose stools daily) is defined as loose stool that last at least 4 weeks.

Here,if your all investigation have come normal then the only possibility could be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) which I forget to mention as a differential diagnosis in my previous answer.

Irritable Bowel is a very long term issue and needs constant therapy.

Unfortunately till date, there is no permanent cure for the problem and it's management relies on diet and lifestyle modifications along with certain medications.

1) Diet and Lifestyle modifications in IBS like avoiding Pulses and Beans, food with high amounts of refined sugars will help.

Good stress managment, Yoga and Acupuncture have all been used to help manage the symptoms of IBS with good results.

2) Medications in IBS like Loperamide (Immodium) has been used in the management of IBS with diarrhoea but it must be used with caution because the more you use it, the higher risk of getting an infection in your bowels. If you must use it. Use only 1 or 2 tablets in a day and don't use more than Once or twice a month.

Antispasmodics like Mebeverine (colofac or colospa) has also been used to regulate the bowel in IBS.

Talk to your doctor about starting one of those medications.

A good GI doctor (gastroenterologist) will be able to help you with that.

Hope this detailed information will help you.
