may indicate acute or chronic infection
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare
Positive HbsAg can indicate either an acute (recent) infection with hepatitis or chronic (persistent) infection.
To determine if it is an acute or chronic infection, other hepatitis tests would be needed.
This would include anti- HBc , anti-HBs and IgM anti HBc.
The results of these tests would help to determine if the infection is acute or chronic.
If it is a recent infection then the anti HBc and IgM anti Hbc would be positive as well. The anti HBs would be negative.
In some cases an acute infection can resolve and cause no further problems.
IF it is a chronic infection then anti- HBc would be positive but the others would be negative.
If it is a chronic infection, then your doctor would determine the severity.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
