Suggest Treatment For Chronic Pharyngitis

Question: Hello,

I have been having chronic pharyngitis for about 3 months now, and last week a throat culture tested positive for Raoultella ornithinolytica. My doctor has put me on Amoxicillin/culvanicacid 875mg/125mg 3 times a day for 10 days. Now on day 5, I still do not feel that my throat symptoms have subside (still experiencing pain when swallowing, and inflammation in throat).

In november I was also hospitalized for 2 days due to a Campylobacter Jejuni acute diarrhea episode which was treated with 14 days of ciprofloxacin after bloodcultures also tested positive for this bacteria.

I am very worried that something is wrong with me and afraid that the Amoxicillin/Cuvlanic acid is not working (which is should since microbiology department said the Raoultella ornithinolytica is susceptible to this antibiotic combination).

My questions are; what causes this bacterial infection of Raoultella ornithinolytica? and moreover, could there be a connection to the Campylobacter infection I had last November and this bacteria?

I am not experiencing fever or any other pain currently, just pharyngitis related symptoms.

Dear Dr. Abubakar Siddiqh,

You say that the bacteria responds well with amoxicillin + clavulinic acid. However, I am on day 6 of the 10 day antibiotics course and my throat still hurts is this normal? How would I know that the antibiotics are working?

Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Tyelynol 500mg

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Yes. Amoxicillin + clavulinic acid, is the first choice antibiotic for R. ornithinolytica bacteria. Depending on the severity of infection, it can be given for 7- 14 days. In case of pain, you can take over the counter tyelynol 500mg twice daily for couple of days. It takes time (at least, 1 week) for total control of infection.

Redness, discomfort and difficulty in swallowing are the indicators, which gives information about the control of infection.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.
