Posted on Fri, 23 Oct 2015
Question: Hello, I have been diagnosed with citrobacter (Vaginal swab from pap) (the nurse didn't give any more details than that). Reading up on citrobacter is mentions sepis, meningitis in infants, and sometimes death. Is this a very potent and dangerous bacteria that I should be worried about? I was prescribed bactrim tonight to take 2 times a day for 7 days. I work in a medical building. Is this a tough bacteria to fight? XXXX

Brief Answer:
Its a potent , pathogenic organism for UTI.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
Citrobacter species is a potent species and highly pathogenic using UTI , contracted by either direct contact or through hospital staff. Its manifestations are more rampant and dangerous in infants as their level of immunity is fairly low , but in adults it can be easily treated with a course of sensitive antibiotics course for a week followed by a repeat culture to check for completion of treatment.
You should continue bactrim for the treatment and also if need be get a swab culture of your room and surroundings with the help of the pathology lab to ascertain the location of infection in collaboration with the superintendent , so that appropriate fumigation methods may be undertaken.

Thank you. Also I forgot to mention I am celebate! So not quite sure how this manifested considering the swabbed area in which it was found. I was also in a hospital in late XXXXXXX attending to my father-in-law. So I may have picked it up there. I will however let my supervisor know. Just in case the facility is at risk. Many thanks.

Detailed Answer:
The most likely cause of spread could be if you would have used the hospital toilets then seat s could have transferred it to you and the infection could have easily read to cervical area through urethra especially while urination, when spread is commoner.
So nothing to worry, just continue the meds and review for a repeat culture after 7 days to check for completion of treatment.
