Question : My husband and I have had monstrous colds for a few days. He has episodes where he feels his throat is closing up. He is able to breathe but works himself into almost a panic state. Please explain so I can help him. Btw, we are both is good health except for the grandparent syndrome of being unable to stay away from the kids when they're sick. I take no scripts, he takes meds for gerd, Lipitor, and high blood pressure medication.

I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Cold especially with post nasal drip can cause pharyngitis episodes and sometimes, it would feel like gagging.
2. Steam inhalation along with salt water gargling twice to thrice a day, will be help.
3. Antihistamine like cetrizine will reduce secretions and further gagging.
4. Local decongestants may be necessary if there is nasal block.
