Suggest Treatment For Cold And Cough In An Child

Some antiallergic along with paracetamol for fever, if any - needs to be given
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Most of the cough and cold in children are caused due to certain viral infections.
* These are often associated with some allergic component and so antiallergics need to be given. Syrup Relent which contains a mucolytic along with antiallergic, may be given 5 ml twice daily for 5 days.
* Any additional cough syrup in not required.
* Antibiotics are ineffective in such infections. So, I would not suggest taking them.
* Paracetamol syrup like Calpol needs to be given at dose of 15 mg/kg/dose at minimum interval of 3-4 hours in order to bring down temperature, if she has any.
* Give steam inhalation. Just sit with the child in your lap and place the source of steam before you. Water vapour will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. It will help in diluting the cough.
* If the child is active, you need not worry. But if the child becomes lethargic or does not feed well, you would need to visit a pediatrician and get her further evaluated. She may also need interventions if she develops any wheezing.
Hope that helps.
