Suggest Treatment For Cold And Running Nose

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Mar 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,

I have been having cold and running nose since morning yesterday. Last night I had blocked nose that caused problems in having good sleep. I think this was triggered by half a glass of cold drink I had night before yesterday.

Please suggest some medication for relief from this.

Thanks,
XXXXXXX Have had Cheston cold twice yesterday (morning and evening) and once today morning - I'm having mild body ache and headache as well

Brief Answer:
It seems like common cold

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

You are already taking appropriate medicine for this.

Cheston cold contains phenylephrine, cetrizine and paracetamol.
Cetirizine takes care of running nose
Phenylephrine is a decongestant
Paracetamol brings down the fever and also helps with body ache.

To help with blocked nose, you can try otrivin nasal drops for 2-3 times a day for few days.

Take warm fluids.
Saline gargles with warm water also help. Steam inhalation with karvol capsules put in water are also helpful.
Ayurveda preparations like Joshina syrup or sualin lozenges also help.

Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brief Answer:
The dose is appropriate

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

The dose of Cheston cold is already appropriate. Both cetrizine and phenylephrine can be taken 2 times a day.

Paracetamol 500 mg can be taken 3-4 times a day in case of fever. So if you develop fever, you can take paracetamol 500 mg in afternoon as well.

Common cold is a viral infection and gets better by its own in a few days time.
