Suggest Treatment For Cold, Fever, Cough, Sore Throat And Throat Pain

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Jun 2015
Question: So about 7-10 days ago I came down with a nasty cold/flu. Fever, cough, sore throat all day long, which is not typical for me. Usually my throat hurts in the morning and then within an hour or 2 is fine. Not this time around, I had to take round the clock advil to tolerate the throat pain. I went to ER eventually thinking it was strep even though it wasn't very red, and because my upper left molar started to hurt really bad. A piece broke a while back and there is a significant cavity that flares up real bad when it wants to. I am finally on the road to getting the tooth addressed with a root canal, have anxiety issues. I only took the antibiotic for a day, about 5 days ago, and then stopped. I have been noticing the last few days my throat has still been hurting on the left side, same as bad tooth. When I swallow it really hurts, and feels swollen, but looks OK. Do you think my tooth could be infected and this is a direct reaction to that? It is not typical for me to have throat issues like this.

I didn't clarify, the ER doctor gave me the antibiotics. She said as a precaution for the throat and tooth. She didn't take a throat culture.

Brief Answer:
tooth infection, pharyngitis, medication, RCT/extraction

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query. I have gone through your query.

As far as the throat pain and tooth pain is concerned, i have the following possibilities.

The throat pain can be secondary to throat infection or pharyngitis.
The other possible cause can be secondary to tooth infection.

You need to take a radiograph to confirm the diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we can treat the tooth with root canal treatment(RCT) or extraction. Mean while you can take a course of antibiotics particularly antibiotics like amoxycillin and metronidazole (if you are not allergic). Do not stop the medicines without completing the course. Do saline gargling.

Nothing to be panic, consult a oral physician and get it evaluated.

I hope i have answered your query. If any queries are there reply me back.
