Question: My seven week year old has recently had a cold and we noticed today that our baby has a brown layer over his tongue. He seems to be a little colicly, and is always wanting something moist in his month. How should we soothe and cure him?

Cold in the babies are mostly viral in the baby.
Saline nasal drops are helpful to relive decongestion.

If there is no fever, baby is playful, taking feeds normaly then you need not to worry.

Brown tongue may be due to certain medicines , viral illness, elongated papillae on which food particles or medicine may get deposited.

For colick pain you should hold the baby upright after every feed for atlest 20 to 30 mins. Also you can give antispasmodic drops like those containing dil oil, fenel oil, simethicone after consulting a doctor.

Baby may have some pain in throat as he is having cold, that may be the reason he always wants something moist in the mouth.
