Suggest Treatment For Colorectal Polyps

Posted on Thu, 2 Feb 2017
Question:
I have received a call from my gastroenterologist. re: a colonoscopy I had last Tues.
At that time a 15mm polyp was removed. Only one polyp was found and removed.
The doctor today said that it was precancerous, he will be doing another colonoscopy in 4-6 months to make sure he removed all of the polyp. I chose 4 months for the colonoscopy repeat.
I am concerned and worried about this.
Are the chances high that this will be colon cancer eventually?
Are pre-cancerous polyps common?
Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
colonic polyp

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can understand your concern for incidentally diagnosed colonic polyp.
1) Colonic polyps are common.
2) For 1.5 cm sized polyp, endoscopic removal is sufficient. Surgery is not required at all.
3) If histology of that removed polyp comes as pre-cancerous then it mandates another colonoscopy to confirm absence of polyps anywhere in colon. If polyp at other sites are present with histology of pre-cancerous then surgery is required.
4) In absence of polyps anywhere and there is no reappearance of polyp at same site from where it was removed then there is nothing to do except follow up surveillance.
5) If there is polyp at same site from where it was removed indicate insufficient removal in first setting and mandates surgery.

Hope i answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you.
Have a nice day!

If surgery would be indicated, what does that surgery involve.
Do they remove any intestine?
Any other specifics would be helpful.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
surgery would not be required

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Yes, part of colon will be removed in surgery if required.
But I do not think it would be required for you as size of polyp is very small.
