Brief Answer:
Dose adjustment might be needed

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Congenital hypothyroidism needs to be properly treated. Dose adjustment might be needed and periodic follow up and re-investigation is essential. Physical therapy and developmental therapy should also be provided. The birth weight usually triples by 10 to 12 months of age.

Let me know if I could help further.

Sir why this happened to my daughter even proper medication throughout pregnancy.is there any chances of mental retardation or brain damage because hypothyroidism is diagnosed at age of 10 months.at the time of birth she was healthy.no newborn screening was done by hospital.her birth weight was 3 kg 400 gm now she weighs only 5 kg 800 gm.will medication be taken throughout life.

Brief Answer:
Proper dosing is essential

Detailed Answer:
There is not always a definite reason that can be pointed to. The fact is that such a thing has happened and you need to deal with it. Proper dosing is important and that can be decided by the doctor based on the response to medication. You would need proper follow up for the same. Without that there is indeed chance of mental and developmental backwardness. The fact that weight gain is lacking could also have direct association with the thyroid scenario. Medication might be needed for the rest of life but that is not something of concern.
