default
Posted on Fri, 17 Jul 2015
Question: I am allergic in change of weather. I tried nose sprays, decongestants, antihistamine but nothing works. The change in weather makes me dizzy, light headed and weak. It also congest my sinuses. Its very hard to be at work because the air conditioner is too much for my nose. I am experiencing a lot of nose and frontal pain. I have recently have a turbinate reduction surgery and a deviated septum surgery back in March. I could breathe properly now but then these issues starts. I can hardly keep my balance sometimes. I also went to neurologist that did an MRI of my face and brain. He could not find nothing wrong. He put me on Gabapentin but I do not think its working.

1) I am having these symptoms starting about a month about May 01, 2015.

2) I am experiencing blocked stuff nose, dry nose, and sometimes really cold nose on the inside.

3. I tried the nasal steroid spray for about 3 weeks.

4. What type of oral steroids? The doctor gave me prednisone but it had a negative effect on me, shaking, like overbreathing etc.
5. Yes, I have skin test for allergies but the allergist said I am not allergic to anything. I did this twice and a blood test.
6. The pulmonary doctor told me I have a slight breathing restrictions. Say for instance if 80 is normal on the breathing test I got a 77. I could not keep blowing for a very long time. I am not aware of any other allergies other than in the summer time high humidity affects my nose but this is happening even when the humidity is normal.

This only affects me when there is a slight variation in the weather. If I am in constant room temperature I am fine.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
dry nose can cause your symtpoms

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If your allergy tests are negative and you have not responded to steroid nasal spray then it is very unlikely that you have allergy in the nose.

How long have you been using nasal decongestants like afrin and antihistamines ?

Long term use of decongestants (more than 7 days) can cause reflex congestion of the nose and nose block. They can also cause dry nose. Antihistamines can also cause dryness of the nose.

Use of air conditioning , room heaters, hot climate also causes nasal dryness.

Hormonal changes and menopause are also known to cause dry nose.

If you are using any decongestants please stop immediately. Start instilling normal saline nose drops. it will keep the nose well hydrated. Instill 20 drops in each nostril 3 times a day for 10 days.

Inhale plain steam 3 times daily, this will help to clear your air passages.

Do not use airconditioning or fan. Please use a humidifier in your room.

Remember to drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself well hydrated at all times. If you are well hydrated your nose will be moist and healthy.

Fell free to follow up,

Hi:

I have been using nasal decongestant since about a month after my surgery date of 3/4/2015 so about 2 months now on and off not on a regular basis. I will stop at once and only use nasal drops only.

I rarely use the air conditioner at home but at work I have no choice because the office is really cold with the air conditioner. I try turning on a space heater to diffuse it but the a/c in the office cannot be lowered so I am stuck with that one.

So what causes me to be in the fog-like dizziness and losing my balance? Do you think this is related to the nose sprays? I did a vertigo/balance test at the ENT and he stated that everything is good.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
may be gabapentin is to blame

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Gabapentin causes drowsiness. May be that's the reason. Claritin can also cause drowsiness. If you feel gabapentin is not helping you , ask our doctor to stop it. I feel Claritin is also not going to help you since there is no proof of allergies. Once you are off these drugs probably your mental fogginess will clear. I cannot find any other reason for fogginess.
