Posted on Fri, 5 May 2017
Question: First I want to say I've been stressed this week and lacking of sleep. My husband is in the hospital with congestive heart failure so I've been working all day and spending the evenings in the hospital with him. Tonight I went to lay down and I felt palpitations, I do take b/p meds. I took my b/p and it's 175/105 with a pulse of 93. I don't have any chest pain, should I be concerned?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your actual blood pressure values are above the normal ranges.

But a single high blood pressure values does not indicate uncontrolled high blood pressure.

It may be related to the physical and emotional stress (which you have been going through lately). The lack of sleep is certainly a triggering factor of this situation. Caffeine (coffee) intake is another factor.

Coming to this point, I would recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure values in the next day (frequently during the day, in sitting position after 10 minutes of total relax). You should write those values down.

If your blood pressure values are above the normal ranges (1140/90 mm Hg) most of the time, you should consult with your attending physician and discuss the possibility of making some changes to your anti-hypertensive therapy (increasing the doses or add a new antihypertensive drug).

I would also recommend avoiding caffeine intake and reduce salt intake in the next days.

Meanwhile, I recommend taking another pill from your blood pressure medicine to help lower your blood pressure values now.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
