Question : I've always suffered with constipation, about a year or so ago I noticed my magnesium levels were low (very bottom of norm) so I started taking magnesium supplements. My constipation problems were resolved. I am now having problems again.I notice on my last couple of visits to my doctor that she has me down as having hypercalcemia, not sure if that is related or not. But am undecided whether I should up my dose of magnesium.

Brief Answer:
Explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

I appreciate your concern

Hypercalcemia can lead to constipation, peptic ulcer disease and even pancreatitis. Hypercalcemia from malignancy usually is rapidly progressive; thus, repeat levels should be done. Hypercalcemia due to hyperparathyroidism is usually mild and can be present without any symptoms. Levels of phosphate, alkaline phosphatas, urinary calcium, and thyroid function tests should be done as part of the workup. Low levels of mg aren't associated with constipation so I would advise against magnesium supplementat ion.
