Question: Hi Good Evening Doctor.
My Son is 2 & 1/2 months old.
Due to low lactation, I have started to administer "Dexolac Premium 1" atleast twice a day.
In the recent days, my son is constipating and passes stools only once in 5 days and is a deep concern for me. He passes gas which is foul smelling as well.I was advised to give Neopeptine for the same.
Queries:
1. Has Dexolac got anything to do with Constipation and gas
2. Can I continue to give Dexolac going forward.
3. What should I do to improve lactation (Also I'm taking Lactare tab thrice a day... Is it OK?)
Seek your advice.
Pls help.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of dexolac causing constipation is little

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

I have gone through the details and do understand your concern.
Babies on breastfeeding rarely gets constipated while chance of constipation is more on formula feed.
Still as you are giving the formula feed once only per day,I don't think this as a cause of constipation.
Stool pattern varies during first 6-8 months of life.Baby may pass 6-8 stools per day to once in 6-7 days.
I won't get worried for the frequency of stool if there is no vomiting, abdominal distension, painful passage of stool, blood mixed stool or if stool is not very hard.
Foul smelling stool and gas may be a cause of concern but this can also occur due to lactose(present in milk) fermantation.
I suggest you to avoid formula feed if possible.
You can take lactare tablets three times a day as there are no proven side effects noted.
Eat healthy diet, rich in calories with lots of fluids.Milk production increases as much as you feed the baby.Manual expression of milk when the beast feeding gets finished helps in increasing the milk production.
Most of the time it is the misconception that breastfeeding milk is not adequate.
Adequacy of breastmilk can be judged by frequency of urine, weight gain and baby should not cry after the feed gets finished.
If all these are Ok this means that milk production is adequate.
Neopeptine drop can be continue as it helps in decreasing the gas production and also decreases colic.
Hypothyroidism is also a known cause of constipation in this age and I would like to get thyroid profile done if not done previously.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more query.
Regards
