Suggest Treatment For Constipation With Bloating And Weight Gain

Question: Good evening, I am very constipated with bloating for the last few months, I have been trying natural remedies without much success so I resort to laxatives once a week the bloating is uncomfortable but I haven't lost weight In fact I have put it on if anything.
What's my next step?

Hi,

From what I read, you have a fairly recent onset of constipation which needs laxative weekly along with bloating / distension and weight gain. I also note that you are post menopause age group and on treatment for IBS.

Now, IBS is very known to cause bloating and digestive issues. And IBS is fairly a life style condition. It's best treated with life style change - exercise; dietary regulation; adequate sleep and destressing measures. Medical management is generally necessary for more severe cases.

That being said since the complaint is fairly recent, I feel we need to investigate for other causes including acid peptic disease, hypothyroidism and menopause related hormone change. In this circumstance I would suggest,
1. Starting a proton pump inhibitor for 2-3 weeks. It is available over the counter as well as a prescription medication.
2. Testing thyroid function test
3. Continuing dietary measures
4. Starting physical exercise
5. Weight management

Discuss about these options with your treating doctor / gastroenterologist.
