Question : Hi, my 17month old son has been for the past 4 days with a bad cough and bit of a stuffy nose, very grizzly and tired. And also the past 3 nights after he has a bottle and falls off to sleep he suddenly wakes up and has a pretty much a cough attack and vomits, should this be of any concern, i took him to the doctor and they said it just sounds like a croupy cough and gave him redipred but it doesnt seem to be doing anything for him besides taking the husky sound away, im worries it could be something else

Brief Answer:
Unlikely due to any other disease as per symptoms and age

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM

I completely understand your concerns but don't worry. Croupy coughs with associated systemic symptoms such as lethargy, poor appetite, running nose, red eyes, sore throat, broken sleep due to uneasiness, fever and irritability are most likely due to viral infections especially H. Influenza.

Its unlikely due to any other diseases as per the age and typical symptoms of your child. Don't worry. It may take a week for symptoms to completely resolve.

I would recommend you to stop redipred after 48 hours treatment. It's a steroid and it's use for more than 2-3 days is not recommended unless and until there is severe breathing difficulty.

You may give him Syp. Tixylix which has glycerin for soothing throat along with an antihistamine such as Chlorpheniramine or Benadryl for symptomatic relief.

In case, the condition still doesn't respond, take him to a hospital setting, for adrenaline nebulization which is useful for resistant croups.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.

Take care
