Question: Hi, I know that I can't use vick baby rub on my 3 weeks old. Can I just put the open jar of baby vick inside the baby sock and leave it near where he sleep (above him or somewhere that he won't be able to get to it). He has RSV and his cough is getting better just the stuffy nose. And as for my 4 years old, his cough just come and go, cough for a week or 2 , then gone for a few days, then come back, he using baby vick. Can he use Vicks? And he taking zyrtec in/out door allergy as the Dr told. That was what helped his cough went away. Then I stopped. Then now cough came back, should I keep giving him the zyrtec? He did went to the Dr. Test and everything, it was just some stuffy nose and cough

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation is the mainstay of treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Contrary to popular belief, Vicks does not actually help even in case of adults. It is just due to the cooling effect of menthol and the soothing/astringent effect of oil of wintergreen that there is a sense of relief. But actually it does not help in reducing the effect of cold.

Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections. RSV (a virus) is the causative agent in this case. Test results come clean in such cases. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. You need to give steam inhalation to both of your children. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block. For both the children antiallergics like Zyrtec can be given for a few more days.

Please be patient. Recovery will gradually occur.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Regards
