default
Posted on Tue, 19 Jan 2016
Question: Last Tuesday I started having vomiting and diarrhea. I went to the ER, blood work was drawn etc. Two days later the vomiting stopped and I was told to take Imodium for the diarrhea. Today I am starting to have a non productive cough, it sounds bad and I sure don't feel well after this week. I am 77 yrs old. Do you have any suggestions as to what is going on with me. Thank You

Brief Answer:
Viral infection expressed with gastroenteritis&upper respiratory infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I am sorry for the situation you are going through.

What you are experiencing is a viral infection that has commenced with GI problems (gastroenteritis): vomiting and diarrhea.

Hopefully, diarrhea has stopped, however, I advise to:
- increase fluids intake (water, juice, tea)
- take tasectan to clear your intestines from the virus and replace their normal function
- take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora

As coughing has started, it is indicating that you are having upper respiratory infection. Take coughing medications containing:
- anti-inflammatory meds (paracetamol or ibuprofen)
- anti-histaminics (to ease coughing)
- bronchodilatators to alleviate respiration problems.
- phlegm-reducers like carbocystein

Do not forget to take plenty of fluids to keep well hydrated especially water, chicken soups and tea.

Aerosol-therapy can help ease coughing together applying cold balm on your chest and back.

In case one of the following will occur, I highly recommend to consult with your doctor as you might need to take prescription medicines (e.g. antibiotics):
- if no improvement
- if symptoms will get worse
- if high fever

Wish fast recovery!
