Question : Hello,
I had accidentally bitten my lower lip really hard a month ago. A couple of days later a cyst started growing. I used alum powder to dry it out and it worked, it was popped (I used some force to pop it out though) and some sticky mucus came out and a small crater like hole was left. After that the hole started to heal and I was relieved that the cyst was gone. However as soon as my lip was completely healed, another cyst started growing. I used alum powder again and went through the whole process. However it keeps coming up. Now I dont even use anything, it just grows as a big bump, bursts and releases that sticky mucus, heals and grows again. The whole process from bursting to bursting again takes appx 4-5 days. I did some research online and it appears that one of my salivary gland is damaged and I need to get it removed. Is there any other way around? If not, what kind of doctor/surgeon should I go?

Hello

Thank You for contacting HCM. My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. What you searched online is not compulsory to be your condition. I would suggest you not to judge yourself. It will only create stress. Following measures will help to reduce your problem:

- Apply somogel (combination of Lignocaine (Base), Menthol, Eucalyptol, Cetylpyridinium chloride, Ethanol) on small amount over thr sore. leave for 2-3 mins and then wash your mouth will plain water. Repeat this 3-4 times a day.
- Use any antiseptic mouth wash for your local store and use it twice a day.
- Food that will help:
soft, non-acidic foods, such as my omelette, mashed potatoes or mild, sauce-based foods like spaghetti. Try to take yogurt on daily basis.

- AVOID:
Acidic foods as citrus fruits, tomatoes, vinegars, pickles and ketchup while you're waiting for the ulcer to clear up.

Hopefully you will see improvement in 3-4 days BUT if condition remains same or aggravates then you need to visit a "Consultant Dermatologist" for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!

Hello Doctor,
Thank you for your response! I am in USA so I am not sure if I can get somogel (I dont know what it is) here. Is there any alternative that I can get without a prescription?

Also, the issue is that the cyst wont stay more than 2 days. It will burst and then come back immediately. I checked by pressing ones it busted and realized that little bit of mucus keeps coming out of the scar every 2-3 minutes. that's why I have a feeling that maybe salivary gland is damaged. Do you have any opinion about this ?

Hello

Thank you for the followup query. You can visit your nearest pharmacy and ask for salt (combination of Lignocaine (Base), Menthol, Eucalyptol, Cetylpyridinium chloride, Ethanol). He will give you available OTC brand.

Secondly, yes if recurrence like this occurs then it could be due to      obstruction of salivary gland ducts. In most cases it gets resolved itself. IF after taking the above measures, the problem persists then you need to visit hospital and get an appointment for an "ENT Specialist". He is specialized in dealing with oral cavity problems. He will examine you in detail and will discuss the treatment options. Few include: laser therapy, cryotherapy, intralesional steroid injection & surgical removal. Management depends upon severity and general health.

Thank You

Hello Doctor,
Thank you for detailed explanation. However I am little confused in the medicine you suggested. When you said salt you mean is it some kind of special salt or some kind of medicine? Should I just go there and tell them that give me salt medicine?

I apologize for the ignorant questions.

Thank you!
