Suggest Treatment For Deep Vein Thrombosis While Having Sticky Blood Syndrome

Posted on Thu, 25 May 2017
Question: My 65 year old husband has sticky blood syndrome and has had a myriad of issues since serving in Vietnam. Recently he has been complaining that he is cold all the time. He is on blood thinners for life as he had a DVT about 3 years ago. It was 73 today in XXXXXXX and he had a flannel top on and long pants and didn't warm up till after he spent about 30 minutes in the sun. Should we be concerned ?

Brief Answer:
Very likely self limiting but if longer than 2 weeks needs tests

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for asking at healthcaremagic.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.
Sticky blood syndrome (antiphosphilipid syndrome) causes thrombosis and that is the reason your husband had DVT and needs treatment for life. The symptoms with feeling cold do not seem to be related to this though.
The only relation would be if he is cold only in his feet and hands and this would be related to raynolds syndrome that might happen with antiphospholipid syndrome.

If your husband has this feeling cold for less than a week than more common and self limiting conditions might be very possible like a viral infection for example.

If the symptoms are there for longer than 2 weeks than there are some other conditions to consider and tests might be indicated.

Having a CBC to rule out anemia, TSH to check the thyroid function are the basic tests that would be recommended.

If your husband has not had a check of his sugar levels, creatinine, lipids in the last 2 years it might be advisable to have them done also. After age 50 colonoscopy is another routine test to be done every 5-10 years.

So to conclude I would say:
1. if the symptoms of feeling cold are for no longer than a week wait a few more days. Check his temperature time after time to verify if he is having fever.
2. if symptoms longer than 2 weeks a couple of basic tests like CBC and TSH are recommended
3. some routine tests related to age and gender are recommended also, depending if he has had them done recently or not.
4. some blood thinners need regular tests to make sure your husband has the right dose. You will need to talk to your doctor to make sure if your husband needs tests for this or not.

I hope this is helpful and answers to your question but please write us in case any more clarification is needed on this.

Kind regards,

Antoneta Zotaj, MD
