Question: I am 60 - male - treat high BP with 10 mg amlodipine early in the morning. Some mornings (after breakfast), without warning, I have a large shapeless (but not watery) B.M. of normal color. A while later, I'll feel lightheaded, and weak or fatigued. My diet varies very little. My G.P. doesn't seem to have a clue. Should I see a G.I. specialist?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

After reviewing your data and history I would like to say that your symptoms are suggestive for IBS ( irritable bowel syndrome ).

IBS isn't a life threatening conditions, however all the necessary examinations should be done in order to confirm the diagnosis and to begin proper treatment.

This is why I strongly recommend to contact a gastroenterologist for proper examinations and treatment.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!

I have had none of the pain associated with (descriptions I've seen) of IBS. The weakness I feel starts maybe an hour after one of these (atypical) incidents. It can last to some extent for days. During that time, exercise is challenging. During normal times, exercise makes me feel better afterwards.
I do eat a diet with plenty of fiber; it's rare that I don't have two B.M.'s per day. When this unusual type occurs, it's usually after a smaller, very ordinary B.M. I never have two of these "shapeless" (but not watery) B.M. in a row - It's weeks or months apart that such incidents occur.
My G.P. says my last EKG was "textbook", and my B.P. seems to be under control.
I take Red Yeast Rice (600mg) as a supplement. I eat fish (usually Salmon 4 days per week, and skinless chicken other days. I eat plenty of vegetables and fruit.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

As I said above, your symptoms are suggestive (and not typical) for IBS. Please keep in mind that IBS has a variety of clinical manifestation, some of them are typical (as those that you have read online) and some are less typical.

My opinion is that your symptoms may related to bowel distension and vagal nerve stimulation, which is manifested with lightheaded, profuse sweeting, fatigue etc.

This is why it's important that you contact a gastroenterologist to confirm my suspicion through the above mentioned examinations.

Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!
