Suggest Treatment For Depression And Memory Issues

Posted on Mon, 2 Nov 2015
Question: My 32 yr old nephew is depressed and having memory lapses. He is also drinking heavily. Not sure which came first...the alcohol or depression. He has a family, three children including a nine yr old with aspergers. He is under a lot of pressure . He was prescribed Wellbutrin just two days ago. His wife is afraid of him...hostile moods. Where should we start. This can't be ignored while we wait for the wellbutrin to take effect. His wife called me for advice because we are very close.

Brief Answer:
Bupropion in alcoholism-contraindicated.Alternatives may be used.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I could not see the rationale for which he has been prescribed Wellbutrin because alcoholism is a contraindication for wellbutrin therapy.

In the current scenario, safer and faster acting alternatives like Mirtazapine may be used.

A consultation with Psychiatrist may be of further help in this regard.

If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Dr.Ajay Panwar,
