Brief Answer:
confirmation of diagnosis is needed and it can be treated

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

I appreciate your efforts to seek for help.

In depression symptoms are low mood, lack of interest, sleep disturbance, weight loss or gain, hopelessness, worthlessness, fatigue and death wishes are there. These symptoms should be there for at least 2 weeks and should affect person's social or occupational life.
To diagnose depression detail history and mental status examination are required and these are to be done by a Psychiatrist.

Treatment of depression includes both medicines and psychotherapy.

In psychotherapy I prefer cognitive behavior therapy(CBT).In mild cases only CBT is sufficient. In moderate to severe cases initially medicines and then CBT is added. And later on medicines stopped gradually.

In medicines SSRI group of drugs(fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, escitalopram) are main stay of the treatment.
Benzodiazepines group of drugs(clonazeapm, lorazepam or etizolam) are used initially for short duration for fast symptomatic relief.

In my opinion you must consult psychiatrist without hesitation as soon as possible. Earlier the treatment starts better the results.

I request you to visit a psychiatrist or at least your GP who is aware about depression. It will make a big difference. Even if you are not in depression it will help in preventing the same.

You can revert back to me with your symptoms and relevant history for further comments.

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,

Dr.Chintan Solanki.

I have all the above symptoms. I moved from one side of the country to the other to try and beat it, but it's not worked. as a result my gp is a stranger. I don't want him to think I'm just after time off work!

Brief Answer:
visiting a psychiatrist would help

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for follow up.

If all symptoms are there only changing environment will not help. Depression happens due to biological, psychological and social factors. So you need medicines also according to severity.

Without delay consult psychiatrist so you can come out of the problem fast.
