Question : I am a 10-yr survivor of Stage3B colon cancer. Surgery removed about 14", roughly centered by appendix. I had 7 mos of chemo (5FU+ oxaplatin + something else I can't remember). Developed moderate peripheral neuropathy that did not resolve and then 5 yrs ago developed diabetes and neuropathy is now severe. I take metformin, glyburide and levemir injections. Increasingly I have severe diarrhea almost daily but am not losing weight. Some doctors have suggested metformin as contributory but I have not notice direct link. Taking XXXXXXX dose of neurotin and several doses of Imodium daily. Any suggestions or directions I should implement. This greatly affects quality of life and activities. Thank you. P.s. I'm 62.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that when you have multiple comorbidities it is very difficult to delineate one as the causative agent . To what I think your diarhhoea can be due to autonomic neuropathy due to diabetes also along with side effect of drugs . So try to keep your diabetes in control as much as possible.

Add bitter gourd to your diet , it is known to improve the sugar controls plus check with a supplement having chromium as it reduces insulin resistance.

For your neuropathy your physician can also try gabapentin or pregabalin along with vitamin B 12 supplement . It could prove very beneficial. But you will need to discuss these options with your treating doctor as he is the best judge of your situation .

Take care.

Dr. Shruti
