Brief Answer:
Hemorrhoids are the most probable reason of blood in stool.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Frequent stool passing due to diarrhea can cause hemorrhoids appearance or worsen existing hemorrhoids so they start to bleed. This is the most probable reason of blood in stool at your case. Hemorrhoids blood appears on a surface of a stool and toilet paper. It is bright red, never black.
Unfortunately at your age (over 50) any blood in stool can be also caused by colon cancer. This is less probable than hemorrhoids.
But it is reasonable to have colonoscopy done at such case.
If its about hemorrhoids, you may improve theirs condition but you can not make them disappear without surgery.
You may try such treatment:
- have sitz baths with Oak Bark
- start OTC suppositories for hemorrhoids
- do not push hard on stool
- start probiotic intake
- increase fiber rich products intake

Such treatment should cause improvement in a week or so.
I suggest you get scheduled for colonoscopy, no matter if the bleeding will stop or not.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
Dark stool is a normal thing.

Detailed Answer:
Dark stool (not black like a tar) is normal thing. Start probiotic intake and the stool color should get back to normal.
Bleeding and itching are the signs of hemorrhoids. Sometimes there are lumps visible in the rectal area. But lack of them does not rule hemorrhoids out.
Rectal examination can give a diagnosis or rectoscopy. Colonoscopy should reveal hemorrhoid as well.
