Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea And Intestinal Cramps

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jul 2015
Question: I'm in China working. 51, male, 177lb., athletic, no major problems, on Atorvastatin, Lisinopril, (OTC) Omeprezol and vitamins. Have been here 6 months. Also visited S. Korea over a weekend 3 weeks ago. Have gotten diarrhea for 3 days now. Symptoms started in Qingdao which is on the coast and I'm now in the Gobi desert. Some other people working on the same project have also had some intestinal problems over the last 2 weeks. Other symptoms: Gas, stomach rumblings and intestinal cramps. Not returning to USA til late August. Have often drunk some soft drinks here and even some Red Bull energy drinks over the last 10 weeks. Don't know if that is a contributing factor. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Seems to be Traveler's diarrhea. Start treatment right now.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you!

Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

It is very common (as obvious in other colleagues too) condition known as traveller's diarrhea. It happens when you are on some expedition and travel different areas at a short period of time. Gobi desert is notorious for the same.

Anyway, you need a good hydration. Take pedialyte 4,5 times a day and plenty of water to revitalize you. Take high fiber diet. Coconut water 250 ml daily is best for you if available.

I suggest you to take Rifaximin 200 mg by mouth 2 times a day for 7 days (you need a prescription from local physician for this drug). Plus, Imodium 4mg right now and then 2 mg 4 times a day until diarrhea is resolved ( it is available over the counter). Take Ibuprofen 650 mg twice daily if fever and body aches. Take Omeprazole 40 mg twice daily before meals for a week. It's all needed and you will be alright in no time.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns. I will be happy to get back to you shortly. If satisfied here, please give a five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.

Regards!
