Question: My 5 yr old has had 2 episodes of clay coloured stools. She felt unwell 3 days ago and complained of a sore tummy. She opened her bowels, the next day she had diarrhea and then the following days the clay coloured stools. Should I be concerned and take her to the doctor?

Brief Answer:
Wait and watch

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Unless there is yellowishness of skin and high colored urine, i would not get concerned. As of now my suggestion would be to wait and observe rather than rushing to a doctor.

Regards

Thank you for advice. Will just monitor and see how she goes. A couple of months ago she also complained of having a sore tummy, vommited X1 and the next day felt generally unwell with a sore tummy again. I did get her reviewed by a doctor. The only thing picked up was that she had ketones +++ in her urinalysis. Her blood sugar was 5.6 mmol when checked. The doctor was not concerned. Do you think this episode could be linked to her now having clay coloured stools?
Just concerned as the symptoms linking the two are complaints of sore tummy.

Brief Answer:
Not a cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond faster. A ketone positivity indicates starvation. In other words it indicates that she is not feeding well. All that is needed in such cases is to feed the child properly. In any case, there seems to be no connection between this and the current stool colour.

You need not worry. Proper hydration is all that is needed as of now.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
