Question: thank you! My granddaughter (18 months old) just spent 3 days in the hospital for severe dehydration due to vomitting and diahrrehe and is home now but her CO2 levels were at 16 on Sunday. Today my daughter took her back to Dr. because she still has diarrehea and is lethargic. Dr. put her on stronger probiotic. Should we take her somewhere else for second opinion?/

Brief Answer:
Dehydration

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for your question.

Sounds like she has a stomach virus. This can last a couple of days or go as long as a couple of weeks. The key is staying well hydrated while the illness runs its course. At times the dehydration can become so severe as to require fluids via IV, as you have experienced.

Once rehydrated, the hospital typically discharges the patient home. That doesn't mean the illness has resolved. We still try to maintain hydration with oral fluid intake while the virus runs it's course. A probiotic can often be helpful in helping the stomach heal faster. However, once again, every effort must be made to maintain hydration orally. If this fails, must revert back to the IV.
