Posted on Mon, 31 Aug 2015
Question: Good evening Doctor XXXXXXX is 13 and has had diarrhea since yesterday(10-12) bouts of loose motion. , We tried Oflaxin and ornidazole + Econorm with small doses of fluid being given. What is the ideal time gap between dosages? His regular doctor is out of town and is not reachable and we had to get into action.
Will be grateful if you can respond at the earliest please.
Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for contaction Healthcaremagic
Diarrhoea of such frequency is usually either due to viruses or bacterial toxins. Parasites and anerobes against which ornidazole acts don't cause acute sever diarrhoea. Major problem with these is dehydration and don't require antibiotics unless there is fever, person is toxic or there is bloody stools
One has to maintain hydration - hence we normally advice ORS at the rate of 200ml with each bowel movement. Zinc supplement helps and we usually supplement 20mg twice a day. Hence contact a local physician and get your son evaluated so as to plan the most appropriate treatment. The current drug regimen is not one that I recommend.
