Question: My son, 39 years old, has excessive perspiration, flulike symptoms, diarrhea, and trouble getting food to stay down. Even has trouble drinking water.

The symptoms your son is experiencing is suggestive is Acute Gastroenteritis. It is usually caused by viral infection.
You will start feeling better on 2-3 days and completely relieved usually in a week.
There is no specific treatment for viral Gastroenteritis. Management is supportive care.
Drink plenty of fluids. Drink electrolyte solutions like Gatorade to avoid dehydration, electrolyte depletion(which causes lightheadedness).
Follow liquid diet like soup for first 24-48 hours followed by BRAT (Banana, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) diet until you notice feeling better.
An anti-emetic like promethazine can be taken to prevent nausea and vomiting.
