Brief Answer:
Hypothyroidism and PCOS is clearly the cause, but it can be tackled

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Based on the provided query I have noted that you have both hypothyroidism and a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which I am guessing is why you have been prescribed glucophage.

Sadly, both hypothyroidism and PCOS lead to weight gain and make weight loss very very very difficult. I have encountered numerous such cases, with many of them being from my extended family as well.

The key is to stick to a rigorous exercise regimen and have a very very strict diet regimen. Let me provide you with a diet sample:

1. Breakfast: Between 6:00 -7:30 am

+Bowl of cereal and one entire fruit
or
Bowl of fruits (mixed) - please avoid fatty fruits like mangoes, papaya, bananas, etc.
or
Boiled vegetables with 2 slices of bread

+To drink a glass of hot water with juice from half a lemon to be squeezed into it immediately after each meal. No sugar at all, not anywhere or anytime in the day

+Every two hours, have one carrot or sliced tomatoes, and plenty of water

2. Lunch: 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

+One entire chapati or roti or two slices of bread, with one piece of meat (if you are a non-vegetarian) preferably grilled or baked, and one entire tomato sliced

+To drink a glass of hot water with juice from half a lemon to be squeezed into it immediately after each meal. No sugar at all, not anywhere or anytime in the day

+Between meals have a fruit, or an entire carrot, or fresh juice made from vegetables and/or fruit (no sugar to be added at all)

+Plenty of water between meals

3. Dinner: 6:30 - 7:30 pm, has to be the lightest meal of the day (mandatory)

+Make sure you have dinner at least 2-3 hours prior to bedtime

+Meal can include one slice of bread or half a chapati (roti) with either boiled or dry cooked vegetables (minimum or no oil to be used)

+Exercise should be included during the first half of the day

+Please also note, do not include any cold drinks between meals, not even cold water

+To drink a glass of hot water with juice from half a lemon to be squeezed into it immediately after each meal. No sugar at all, not anywhere or anytime in the day

+If you feel hungry close to bed time, you are only allowed to have half a carrot or so, nothing else

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help. If you follow my diet as is given, without making any additions to it, no desserts, no sugar containing items, no carbonated drinks, no sugar with tea or coffee, etc; I guarantee you results.

Best wishes.

Brief Answer:
Your doctor might by trying to help with weight loss, let me explain

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

You have a very good question and I would be more than glad to help you clear it.

Hypothyroidism is usually treated only when the patient is symptomatic. There are some patients who have slightly low thyroid hormone levels, but are asymptomatic, in such cases some doctors choose not to treat them. But there are some patients who have normal thyroid hormone levels, but are still symptomatic.

Your doctor may be suspecting your thyroid to be playing a role in your weight gain (or difficulty with weight loss), which can be considered a symptom and thus insists on you taking the thyroid medication. Taking it will not cause you any harm, and if at all better control of your thyroid hormones contributes towards weight loss, then why not. What do you think?

I hope I have explained things in a manner best understood by you. Please feel free to write to me no matter what, I am always here to help you. :)

Best wishes.

Brief Answer:
Diet and exercise is the key, do not depend on the meds

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

The medication is just an assist to weight loss, but not the real charm. In my opinion, exercise plus a very strict diet regimen is the answer, if at all there is any.

Both hypothyroidism and PCOS can make it very difficult to lose weight, and those who successfully end up losing weight do so with a very strict and non-flexible regimen.

I advise you to try the diet along with crossfit, and write back to me in about 3-4 weeks time, with your weight changes (hopefully). And anytime in between, feel free to write to me regarding anything, I am always here for you. :)

Best of luck.
