Suggest Treatment For Dissociated Vertical Deviation

Question: Hi, I am 35, and was born with strabismus, which was corrected surgically at the age of nine months. I am also long sighted, have astigmatism in both eyes and DVD (dissociated vertical deviation) which can occur in either eye, but is predominant in the left eye which had a squint.

I resisted the urge to learn to drive until I was in my early 30s, but finally 'had a go' and took lessons. Unfortunately I failed my test and lost all confidence, blaming my failure on my eyes. I have since tried driving sparingly and have now developed issues percieving the 'shape' or 'footprint' of the car as I'm driving, so my road positioning is off. This has led to further loss of confidence and the realisation that i may never drive, which saddens me.

I used to wear glasses to combat this 'variable' depth perception issue and resultant eyestrain, but I no longer get headaches, and the glasses don't make much difference otherwise. I'm wondering whether I should give up hope of driving, or whether there are operations I could pursue that would remedy these issues?

Many thanks

Brief Answer:
Surgical correction is required in case of DVD.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir.

I understand your query and concern.

DVD is condition which typically occurs in association with squint, the exact cause even though unknown is believed to result from faulty innervation of eye muscles.

Management of this condition is primarily surgical, which involves reducing the strength of the superior rectus muscle or anterior transposition of inferior oblique muscle of the affected eye .

The outcome of the results can be equivocal in your case as the presentation is late.
It also depends on angle of squint prior to and after surgery .

Overall the recent surgery results have been good.

Finally its in the hands of an eminent Ophthalmologist/squint surgery specialist, who can accurately predict the degree of stereopsis/depth of vision possible after surgical correction of DVD.

You can have good driving skills, only when good stereopsis is attained post DVD.

Hence you need not completely loose heart on this issue, but a consultation with an eminent Squint surgeon will help to reveal the possible facts

Post your further queries,if any.
Thank you.
