Posted on Fri, 28 Apr 2017
Question: Not sure if I need a colonoscopy or an MRI. I have bad pain on the left side of my mid back at night when I lay down. Have been checked for kidney stones, and gallblader checked, and kidneys checked. All look great. But something has to be wrong. I also have been diagnosed in the past with diverticulitis.

Brief Answer:
MRI spine should be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking query on this forum.

Upper and middle back pain may be caused by Overuse, muscle strain, or injury to the muscles, ligaments, and discs that support your spine. Poor posture. Pressure on the spinal nerves from certain problems, such as a herniated disc. you should go for an MRI spine to rule out the cause of problem.

Advice to be followed till MRI is done-

Middle back pain is usually positional.
Do posture exercises daily to strengthen posture.
Relieve mid back pain by being conscious of your posture.
Change body position and posture.

Once the cause is diagnosed treatment to be taken is-
Over-the-counter pain medicines, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory Acetaminophen (for example, Tylenol).

Heat or ice fomentation.
Physiotherapy exercise.

Thanks!
