Question: Hi I am on two Antibiotics, Levofloxacin 500MG, Metronidazole 500MG.I have been taken them since last Friday. My Diagnose was Diverticulitis, and possible pneumonia. I can't eat, I am sleeping all day, and have heart palpitations when I walk. I have lost 10 lbs. The last day for my Levofloxacin is Monday, but the Metronidazole is for another week, can I stop the Metronidazole at the same time? I'm afraid of getting CDEF again.
Thank you for your advise

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend
Welcome to HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.

For c.diff infection , we prescribe a 10-day course of oral antibiotics metronidazole.

Improvement usually happens within 72 hours after starting antibiotics, but the diarrhea may return temporarily.

Another round of antibiotics is needed in about some cases.

So, if you have completed the 10 day course you may stop that. However, I personally prefer to give it for 14 days.

I understand that is causes nausea and also you get very offended by taking such a long course antibiotics. But that is for your better health only.

I also advise addition of Probiotics and combination of Pantoprazole and domperidone once a day.

Also start eating adequately now, as because of diverticulitis and antibiotics the appetite gets suppressed and there is lots of fluid and electrolyte loss in diarrhea.

Don’t worry at all, you will be fine soon.

If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
