Question: HI, my daughter who is 30 years old is experiencing dizziness to where it feels as though the room is spinning and she has a hard time moving her head. She also has ringing in her ears just before the dizziness started. Any idea of what maybe taking place? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Inner ear issue

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Judging from that description of vertigo (sensation of spinning movement), exacerbated by head movement and ringing in the ears I would say that it is a typical case of vertigo related to inner ear dysfunction. The inner ear structures apart from hearing are involved also in balance and their involvement may manifest with the above symptoms.

So I would suggest an ENT consult to check for other signs pointing to the cause. In the meantime to alleviate the symptoms over the counter medication like meclizine or dimenhydrinate are commonly used.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.

Thank you Dr. Take. She went to Emergency Care and was told that she had a inner ear infection and Prendisone was prescribed, 20mg for the next six days. They did not mention Vertigo but could this be just a very bad infection? If it's Vertigo, how long could this lasts and can it repeat again? Can this cause a problem when she has to fly? Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello again! Good to know that ER confirmed there wasn't anything else more serious.

As for the term Vertigo, it is not a diagnosis, it is merely a symptom, the one word term used to describe used to describe that sensation that the room is spinning. So while evident from their diagnosis they think it's vertigo, no need for them to necessarily use that term back, it's the patients description that counts.

As for how long that depends on the type of infection and whether there is damage to the nerve. Usually it lasts for a couple of weeks (gradually improving), but it can take longer depending on the nerve damage and time needed to regenerate. If a viral infection as they seem to think judging by the given treatment, then in over 95% it is an isolated event, doesn't repeat. Shouldn't cause any issues for flying.

I hope to have been of help.
