Suggest Treatment For Dizziness When On Amox For Strep Throat

default
Posted on Thu, 29 Jan 2015
Question: I am experiencing dizziness since this morning. My pulse was in the 50s and is now in the 60s. I have been on amox for 5 days for strep throat. I also take toprol for heart palpitations. After some googling, I found that either med could increase the levels of the other. My thought is the amox is causing toprol levels to be higher in my blood and therefore reducing heart rate and causing dizziness. My plan is to half my toprol dosage tonight to see if it helps. Does this sound like a possible explanation for dizziness I am experiencing? Any reccomendations?

Brief Answer:
Not sure about that being the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.

I have done a drug interaction check and found no drug interactions between amoxicillin and Toprol. I did this on UptoDate.com a reliable physician reference tool that many physicians subscribe to. It is true that toprol can lower your heart rate. Many people on Toprol will have a heart rate between 50 and 60. It is in the class of beta blockers and that is one of their actions on the heart. It may just be your infection causing the dizziness. I do not think I would recommend decreasing your toprol dose without talking to your doctor but it probably would not hurt you to decrease it for just one night if you feel that it would help you.

I suggest resting and drinking plenty of fluids as being somewhat dehydrated can make dizziness worse. Avoid caffeine and alcohol because they can make dehydration worse.

I hope you are feeling better soon. Thank you for using HCM.

Thank you for the info. I found my info on rxlist.com at http://www.rxlist.com/drug-interactions/amoxicillin-oral-and-metoprolol-su-hydrochlorothiaz-oral-interaction.htm. I will make an appt with my GP tomorrow. This is my 3rd bout of dizziness in under 6 months. I want to make sure that there is not something else going on.

Brief Answer:
I see where you got that information

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

I looked at that site and I see what it says about the drug interaction. I am not familiar with that site but I can tell you that I have treated many people on Toprol with amoxicillin and have not had a problem. Since you have had dizziness at other times it could be that your toprol dose is to high or that you are getting dehydrated. It could be also other problems like anemia or thyroid so it is good for you to see your doctor.

Best wishes to you for feeling better soon.
