Suggest Treatment For Dizziness
Is there a med I can take to relieve the dizziness?
Postural hypotension - slow change in position nec
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Looking at the clinical symptoms and query, my opinion is as follows:
1. You have postural hypotension. It is commonly seen in the elderly as the baro-receptors in the neck carotid blood vessels, take more time than normal to adjust the blood vessels of whole body to changing positions. This leads to pooling of blood in the lower limb vessels. When you suddenly stand, more time is taken for the blood to reach brain resulting in dizziness and in extreme circumstances, fall.
2. Avoiding sudden movements, especially in changing positions like sitting to standing, or sleeping to standing etc is important. Make slow changes in position, so that you can give time for blood vessels to adjust to changing positions.
3. Be well hydrated (avoid dehydration), if excessive, you can use leg stockings to reduce pooling of blood in legs.
4. Avoid falls. Falls can be dangerous at this age. Look carefully into each medicine you take, as some can exacerbate hypotension. Use a walking stick for good support, if necessary.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
