Suggest Treatment For Dog Bite

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Jul 2017
Question: Last night a dog suddenly bit me over my trousers. I immediately kicked it off. I returned home and found there is no blood, no scratch signs and no biting sensation at all, and my trousers is also fine without any marks of bite. I have washed the area with antiseptic and there is no burning sensation. Please suggest as I am very scared.

The dog had caught hold of my trousers with its teeth just above my calf muscle of my left foot, but i just kicked it away. My wife and myself have checked the portion on my foot for almost 20 minutes and could not find a single drop of blood or a single scar or mark, and neither there is any pain or burning sensation. Please suggest.

Dear Madam, thanks a lot. Please suggest if there is any side effects if I take the vaccine and there is not bite mark on my foot as I could release its teeth almost immediately. This morning also I checked and could find no scar. Kindly help me in knowing this that if there is no bruise or skin rupture and the fact that the dog had bitten me over my trousers which is intact without any bite mark, can its saliva still enter my body coz i knew rabies is caused by an infected dog's saliva. Will taking a tetanus vaccine help or should I go for the 3 dose vaccine ? Kindly suggest Madam.

Brief Answer:
I would err on the safe side and take the vaccine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, I would err on the safe side and take the vaccine. Side effects can be there but they are mostly local, as compared to getting rabies however remote the possibility.
If you have not taken a tetanus shot within a year, do take that too along with 3 doses of rabies vaccine.

Thank you so much Madam. I went to a hospital and they too suggested me the same, so I was given a Tetvac injection and the 1st dose of Rabipur injection and mentioned 4 more days, on the 3rd, 7th, 14th and 28th day where I should go and take the Rabipur injection. Hope now I can feel relieved.

I have not taken the rabies immunoglobulin though as was not suggested by the doctor. But I have touched that part of the trousers where the dog had bitten to see whether there is any wear or tear and is unsure whether I have kept the same hand on a small 1mm wound in my other foot, just like 2 tiny dots, where a bit of my skin was peeled off due to the removal of the black colored blood clot out of friction with my socks that was present on my other leg where the dog had not bitten. This is my last question and this question just arose in my mind after coming back from the hospital.Request for a kind reply Madam.

Hi XXXX,

do not worry. I do not think you need immunoglobulin. It is required for bad wounds, especially near the head and face.

All the best and regards.

Dear Madam, I am fine today except for the fact that I feel somewhat oversalivating today. Actually it may be because of the fact that while speaking over in the phone I suddenly oversalivated and curiously I opened up google to see its consequences and since then all sorts of negative things are coming to my mind. While I was busy at office I never felt like oversalivating but whenever I am free I am thinking only about this and feel like I am oversalivating. All those google pages are simply eating my mind. It is not yet been 48 hours that I got the dog bite on my trousers though there was not a scratch on my body and its been 30 hrs that I have taken my first dose of Rabipur.

There is no fever or bodyache, no difficulty in swallowing, no nausea or vomiting, infact everything is okay. Today I went to office as well. Please suggest madam. Is the vaccine having some side effects as well madam ?

Brief Answer:
'over salivating' can be due to water brush which is a sign of acidity.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, XXXX, 'over salivating' can be due to water brush which is a sign of acidity.

Please take Omeprazole(20mg) with Domperidone(30mg) twice a day for two days. If it does not reduce, report to your doctor. And I do not think it is side effects of vaccination.

Regards

Madam I thought that is lingering in my mind is how long does the virus take to enter the CNS if it has at all entered though there was no wound or even a scratch? Since the vaccine has already been taken within 12 hours of the dog bite, how effective will it be in protecting against the virus ? Is over salivation something to really about, because I am still unable to understand whether it is actually happening or is it a fact that I am unable to get over the trauma and thinking over it again and again and thinking of all the negative consequences ?? I am actually feeling extremely restless and always thinking of this again and again. Do I need to really worry at this stage ??

Madam is it true that anxiety causes our mind to over focus on various bodily functions. That, in turn, can cause us to create more of those functions. Salivation is a big one - when we think about our saliva, we will often create more saliva, which in turn causes us to think about our saliva more. That can make so much saliva that it even comes out on occasion, leading to drooling. So can this also be a reason for my over salivation ??? Request your kindly reply

Actually I am not understanding whether this excess mouth watering is a consequence of the dog bite upon my trousers 3 days back or is it some kind of OCD that I have started to suffer out of anxiety. Waiting eagerly for your response Madam

Brief Answer:
incubation period is at least 9 days so please relax.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX, incubation period is at least 9 days so please relax. The virus enters the body, then has to multiply and then only it causes the disease.
In case of head/neck and deep wounds more virus can enter. In your case there was doubtful lick and also in the leg.
Did you try taking the acidity medicine I advised?
Please also get an anxiety medicine prescribed by your doctor like alprazolam.

Yes Madam I took a Rabemac DSR twice, once in the morning at 8 am and next at 6 pm today.
Now I am facing 1 more problem. I am having flu like symptoms, having a fever of 99 F and a sore throat, which has developed since late afternoon today. I took a Calpol 650.
Is it an after effect of the vaccine, the next course is due tomorrow morning. Am I safe, serious it is causing a distress now. There is no difficulty is swallowing but there is a little pain. The over salivation looks a bit under control, but when I am swallowing. Even my tonsil glands looks a bit enlarged. Is it simple flu syndrome or something is bad for me ? Request kindly reply.

Brief Answer:
this maybe a mild reaction to the vaccine, or a mild flu.

Detailed Answer:
Yes XXXX, this maybe a mild reaction to the vaccine, or a mild flu. Nothing to do with Rabies.
Continue with salt water gargles and calpol if needed, and you can continue with the vaccine.
